Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
